Do you need your manuscript edited? Here are the various services I provide, with all edits made directly in your manuscript via track changes and comment bubbles. Prices below are based on a double-spaced manuscript with 1-inch margins, using Times New Roman size 12 font (industry standard for formatting). Edits are done in one round; unfortunately, at this time I am unable to re-edit projects, unless you wish to hire me for The Works and need that broken into two rounds: first pass content editing, second pass line editing (Note: breaking The Works into two rounds may be dependent on scheduling, so please ask when you email me). Please note, I don't provide proofreading/final page pass or copy editing services.
- $2.00 per page—Content critiquing. I will focus solely on the story, providing in-depth thoughts within the manuscript on point of view, characterization, showing vs telling, description, sensory details, dialogue, setting, pacing, plot, etc. If needed, I can also brainstorm possible solutions with you after I deliver the manuscript to help fix content issues (please note, I often do so inside the manuscript, making comments and suggestions as I go). No line edits.
- $2.50 per page—Line edits. I will identify the following: awkward or unclear sentences, repetition of sentence patterns, overused words/phrases ("crutch" words), inauthentic-sounding dialogue, body parts acting independently, dangling modifiers, noun/pronoun mismatch, grammar and syntax errors, etc., plus make suggestions for corrections. I will also correct any punctuation errors/typos I find. No content edits.
- $3.50 per page—Medium-level content critiquing with line edits. I will provide full line edits, plus offer a critique on big-picture problems only.
- $4.50 per page—The Works (content critiquing with line edits). I will provide full line edits, plus thoroughly critique the content.
Are you looking to polish a query and/or synopsis before sending it off to an editor or agent? I can help with that, as well! Here are the rates for those services:
- $15—1-page query letter line edits. I will also ask questions and make comment on plot points I feel are unclear. (NOTE: it helps if you also provide your synopsis so I can ensure the query letter content is presented as strongly and effectively as possible)
- $30—up to a 5-page (double-spaced) synopsis line edits. I will also ask questions and make comment on plot points I feel are unclear.
For those of you considering hiring me, here are Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: When's your next free spot on your schedule?
A: In general, I'm booking 4-6 months in advance for novellas and novels. If you're seeking edits on a small project (e.g., a short story, a query letter and/or a synopsis), I can typically squeeze those in much quicker. Email me to find out my current schedule. FYI, many editors are filled up a few months in advance, so if you know you're going to need freelance editing, contact editors sooner rather than later!
Q: Do you offer an editing sample?
A: Absolutely! I will provide a sample edit of the first 5 pages of your manuscript, using industry-standard formatting. Just let me know what type of edits you're seeking (though be aware that content edits for only 5 pages will not be super robust, given the abbreviated size).
Q: Will you edit my non-fiction?
A: My expertise is in fiction, so I recommend you seek another editor who specializes in non-fiction.
Q: What fiction material do you not edit?
A: I don't edit young children's books (picture books, chapter books), since it's not my area of expertise. I won't edit erotic material involving non-consenting intercourse, beastiality, or explicit intercourse with or between minors (in general, nothing illegal, please). At this time I also don't edit manuscripts over 150,000 words (these usually need a LOT of work getting them down to a manageable size, depending on genre of course).
Q: Will you proofread my manuscript?
A: I don't provide proofreading services, sorry. However, I've heard good things about Anne Victory's Oops Detection services.
Q: Is a freelance editor required to submit my manuscript to agents or editors, or to self-publish?
A: No legitimate publisher or agent will require you to have your manuscript freelance edited before submitting, so no--absolutely not. However, if you wish to self-publish, I highly recommend hiring an editor in order to ensure you are producing the best-quality project you can. Your self-published book is being sold alongside books published by e-publishers, traditional publishers, and other self-publishers, so offering edited works will make you more competitive in this tight market. The level of edits you need are up to you, of course. I also recommend hiring a proofreader after all edits are done but before publishing; while I don't provide proofreading services, I've heard good things about Anne Victory's Oops Detection services.
Q: Can you guarantee my story will be published by an e-publisher or traditional publisher or that I will get an agent?
A: Unfortunately, no. I will do my best to help you strengthen your manuscript, but I make no guarantees regarding agents or editors. I am experienced as both an author and editor and will work hard on giving you practical, honest feedback. In the end, it's up to you to follow your gut and incorporate what edits work for you.
Q: If I want to submit to a different editor at Carina Press, can you still edit my manuscript/query/synopsis?
A: I can edit your work, provided 1) your query letter makes it clear that you hired me for freelance edits on your manuscript/query/synopsis, and 2) you send that submission to someone other than me. It's best to avoid conflicts of interest by being clear up-front and ensuring there's no confusion. However, if you wish to submit a manuscript to me at Carina Press, you should find someone else to do any freelance editing on it, if you are in need of a freelance editor (note: freelance editing is NOT required to submit to Carina Press).
Q: What is your editing process?
A: I typically do one round of edits. The length of time will depend on the length of your material and what type of edits you're seeking, but in general, I edit 40-50 pages a day on a project. Once I return the manuscript to you, I'm happy to answer questions, clarify comments, or help you brainstorm feasible solutions to plot issues. At this time I'm unable to review over material I've edited or do subsequent rounds of edits.
Q: How do I reserve a spot on your schedule?
A: I take 1/3 of the entire balance as a down payment to reserve your spot, via Paypal or check. When you email me, please let me know the page count (based on Times New Roman size 12 font, double-spaced, 1-inch margins) and type of edits you are looking for (if you're unable to provide a page count due to a work still being completed/revised, I'll need a ballpark figure). The other 2/3 of the balance will be due upon completion--you will be emailed before I start edits to confirm start and completion dates and are expected to pay the balance within 7 calendar days of completion. I will return your manuscript as soon as it's completed and I've received your final payment. Please note: if your work is under 5,000 words (approx. 20 pgs), I require payment in full to be made upfront.
Q: What is your cancellation policy?
A: If you cancel your reservation at least two months before your edits are due to start, your down payment will be 100% refunded. If you cancel between two months to two weeks before your edits are due to start, your down payment will be 50% refunded. For cancellations less than two weeks before edits are supposed to start, no refund will be given. If I don't receive your manuscript by our agreed-upon date and you don't reply to my email to reschedule, your down payment will not be refunded. Note: if there are extenuating circumstances, please email me as soon as possible so we can discuss it--I understand that emergencies happen and will try to be flexible in working with you. :D
Q: What is your rescheduling policy?
A: I am happy to reschedule projects, provided my schedule allows for it. If you need to push a project back, I will fit you in as soon as there is a slot available. However, please keep in mind that I book several months in advance, so I really appreciate you providing your manuscript and payment in a timely manner.
With my years of experience editing a wide variety of manuscripts for publishers such as Siren Publishing and Carina Press, as well as being a multi-published author with Simon & Schuster, Kensington, and Berkley, I've learned how to edit a story to showcase its strengths and constructively address issues, WITHOUT editing the life and author's voice out of the manuscript.
